How Did I Pick the Best Scuba Diving Destinations for March?

As a diver and travel addict, I know exactly how it feels while booking a scuba diving trip. Excitement in the booking phase, post-payment “depression”, and finally euphoria once the trip starts. Post-vacation “depression” starts kicking in once you will be going over all the amazing underwater pics or videos you have taken.

To make sure you make the right choice and that you have an enjoyable and breath-taking experience, I have chosen the top scuba diving destinations in March based on the following criteria: overall experience, personal experience, seasonality, marine life. If you are keen to learn more on how I assess each single criteria, check out my posts on the best scuba diving destinations in January and February, where I go over the details of each single criteria.

I am always open to feedback and to learn about personal stories and reviews from fellow divers. Feel free to get in touch for advice, recommendations, or simply for some nice diving talk.

Top 10 Scuba Diving Destinations for March 2024

The most amazing diving destinations for March 2024 are spread across the globe, making them an ideal choice for all profiles of scuba divers. No matter where you are located, your experience level, and who you will be traveling with, you’ll certainly find your dream destination!

Hawaii, USA

Hawaii, without a doubt, stands out as one of the premier scuba diving destinations for those seeking underwater adventures in March. The islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty, warm waters, and diverse marine life that make it an irresistible choice for both novice and experienced divers.

One of the key reasons Hawaii shines in March is its consistently pleasant weather and water conditions. March marks the transition between winter and spring, bringing milder trade winds and calm seas. This creates ideal underwater visibility and comfortable water temperatures, typically hovering around 75-80°F (24-27°C). You won’t need to pack a drysuit, a 5 to 7 mm wetsuit will be sufficient.

Hawaii is also home to a plethora of world-class dive resorts and operators that cater to all levels of divers. Whether you’re looking for luxury accommodations or a more budget-friendly option, you’ll find a range of choices on various islands. Maui’s Lahaina and the Big Island’s Kona are known for their excellent dive operators, offering easy access to some of the best underwater spots. If you are in Lahaina, I strongly recommend checking out Lahaina Divers. If you are planning on visiting Kona, I recommend checking out the Royal Kona Resort. They don’t have an in-house dive center, but you can contact Big Island Divers for some amazing charters, and manta ray night dives.

Speaking of dive spots, Hawaii boasts a fantastic array of dive sites that are especially captivating in March. Maui’s Molokini Crater, known for its crystal-clear waters and thriving marine life, is a top pick. The Big Island’s Manta Ray Night Dive, where you can witness these gentle giants gliding through the water under the moonlight, is an unforgettable experience. Oahu’s Hanauma Bay, teeming with colorful fish and coral formations, is another must-visit.

In terms of marine life, in March, you can encounter an abundance of species, including humpback whales, which are in the midst of their annual migration. These majestic creatures often put on spectacular displays of breaching and tail-slapping. On your dives, you’ll also come across vibrant coral reefs, green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and a dazzling array of tropical fish.

As you might be aware, Hawaii was recently hit by Hurricane Dora, that caused multiple wildfires in Hawai’i and Maui. As of September 2023, Hawaii’s population is gradually recover from these natural disasters. Helping to support tourism in Hawaii is definitely one of the most effective ways you can help. Before booking your holiday, I however recommend contacting local resorts and dive operators to check whether they are open or not (yet).

Honduras

Honduras is a true scuba diving paradise in March. This Central American gem boasts warm (between 78°F and 84°F), crystal-clear waters and pleasant temperatures (hovering around 86°F), making it an ideal escape from winter’s chill.

When it comes to dive sites, Honduras is second to none. Roatán’s Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef system globally (second second only to Australia’s great barrier reef), is a mecca for underwater enthusiasts. March is an exceptional time to explore these sites, as the water visibility reaches its peak, often exceeding 100 feet. The Roatán Marine Park and Sandy Bay-West End Marine Reserve are must-visit locations, offering an array of corals, sponges, and vibrant marine life.

In Utila, the chance to encounter the world’s largest non-cetacean animal in the world, the elusive and endearing whale shark, is a major draw. These gentle giants migrate through the area in March, creating a unique opportunity for divers to swim alongside them. The island’s laid-back atmosphere and affordable dive packages make it a fantastic choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Honduras also boasts a diverse marine ecosystem. While exploring its waters in March, you might encounter curious dolphins, sea turtles, moray eels, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, and triggerfish. The mesmerizing coral formations are home to an abundance of macro life, perfect for macro photography enthusiasts.

One of the standout features of diving in Honduras is its range of world-class dive resorts. Places like Roatán, Utila, and the Bay Islands offer a variety of accommodations that cater to divers of all levels. From budget-friendly hostels to luxurious beachfront resorts, there’s an option for every diver.

For example for a budget stay, you might want to consider Roatan Backpackers’ Hostel in Sandy Bay, whereas for a more luxurious stay you should consider Anthony’s Key Resort. If you are more oriented towards Utila, I recommend staying at the Utila Lodge for some amazing diving.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic, nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, is a top-tier scuba diving destination for March. The timing couldn’t be more perfect as this month is during dry season and offers a unique window of opportunity to spot humpback whales in Silver Bank.

Every year, between January and April, approximately 3000 humpback whales migrate to the Dominican Republic’s pristine waters to court, mate and give birth.  Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience that’s unparalleled.

For your stay, the Dominican Republic boasts a handful of exceptional dive resorts that cater to both luxury seekers and adventure enthusiasts. These resorts aren’t just strategically located for easy access to the dive sites; they also provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere after a day’s exploration beneath the waves. For an unforgettable stay I definitely recommend the Viva Heavens by Wyndham or the Ocean Blue and Sand in Punta Cana.

Speaking of dive sites, the Dominican Republic is an underwater Eden. The “Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic” designation ensures that the waters are teeming with life. While you’re exploring the depths, keep an eye out for the mesmerizing coral formations, home to a vibrant array of marine creatures. And of course, the star attractions are the humpback whales, but also reef sharks, nurse sharks, and manta rays glide through the crystal-clear waters, creating unforgettable encounters for divers of all levels.

Note that scuba diving in Silver Bank itself is not permitted, you may however book snorkeling trips or liveaboard (no diving) on silverbankwhales.com.

Mozambique

March falls within Mozambique’s shoulder season, offering pleasant water temperatures averaging around 79°F (26°C) and excellent visibility, making it an ideal time to explore the depths of the Indian Ocean.

Speaking of dive sites, Mozambique boasts some of the world’s most spectacular underwater landscapes. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a must-visit, with sites like Two Mile Reef and Neptune’s Arm offering vibrant coral gardens, drop-offs, and encounters with an array of marine life. But it’s not just about coral – Mozambique’s waters are famous for their encounters with whale sharks, eagle rays and manta rays. March is prime time for these gentle giants, making it a thrilling month for underwater enthusiasts.

Moreover, if you’re a fan of the big stuff, the coastline of Mozambique provides opportunities to see elusive creatures like hammerhead sharks and even the occasional humpback whale passing through. The Quirimbas Archipelago, with its untouched coral reefs, is another gem for divers in March.

As you descend into Mozambique’s waters, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of marine life. Vibrant tropical fish, majestic sea turtles, and playful dolphins are common sights. The coral reefs here are teeming with biodiversity, making every dive a captivating experience.

For accommodations, you’ll find a range of top-notch dive resorts that cater to divers of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your underwater journey, places like the Azura Benguerra Island Lodge and the Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort offer luxurious stays with easy access to incredible dive sites.

Vietnam is a hidden gem among scuba diving enthusiasts, and March is the perfect time to explore its underwater wonders. This Southeast Asian paradise offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and fantastic diving opportunities.

March is one of the best times to visit Vietnam for scuba diving due to its ideal weather conditions. Waters are calm, the visibility is excellent, and the average water temperature hovers around a comfortable 82°F (28°C), making it an inviting escape from colder regions.

When it comes to dive sites, Vietnam doesn’t disappoint. Hon Mun Marine Protected Area in Nha Trang is a must, with its coral reefs, caves, and an abundance of marine life.  Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, offers a unique opportunity to explore underwater caves, providing an unforgettable adventure for experienced divers. These two national parks alone are worth a scuba trip to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s underwater world is teeming with diverse marine life including hard and soft corals. March is the perfect time to witness the breathtaking biodiversity, from colorful coral gardens to rare species like seahorses, nudibranchs, and even whale sharks. The rich waters host schools of tropical fish, making every dive a mesmerizing spectacle. Vietnam is also a paradise for underwater photographers, particularly if you are into macro.

Dive centers like Rainbow Divers and Sailing Club Divers (PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Center) offer professional services and equipment, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Hurghada Northern Red Sea, Egypt

Nestled along the pristine shores of the Red Sea, Hurghada is a premier scuba diving haven, especially in March. Although Hurghada and the Red Sea are a nice scuba destination throughout the year, I prefer going there in Spring due to the ideal weather conditions. Water temperatures hover around 70-77°F (21-25°C) and visibility is excellent, ranging from 65-100 feet (20 to 30 meters). With these water temperatures, I suggest sing a thicker wetsuit, particularly if you tend to be cold easily.

Temperatures above the surface are also ideal, with an average of 63-80°F (15-26°C) This makes March the sweet spot for underwater exploration, with comfortable temperatures both in and out of the water.

Speaking of underwater wonders, Hurghada’s dive sites are nothing short of spectacular. Sites like the Giftun Islands and Abu Nuhas Shipwreck are teeming with marine life. You can witness the colorful coral reefs, encounter sea turtles, and dive alongside schools of vibrant fish. But what truly sets Hurghada apart is its unique accessibility to famous sites like the Thistlegorm wreck (best wreck dive in the world), where World War II history meets marine life in an unforgettable underwater spectacle.

March in Hurghada also means encounters with larger marine species. The chance to spot creatures like dolphins, reef sharks, and even the elusive dugong is at its prime during this time.

When it comes to dive resorts, Hurghada boasts an impressive array of options that cater to divers of all levels. From luxury resorts to more budget-friendly accommodations, you’ll find everything you need for a perfect diving vacation. Popular names like the Steigenberger Aldau Beach Hotel and the Marriott Beach Resort offer not only comfortable stays but also easy access to dive centers and the breathtaking underwater world.

If you are looking for a reliable and professional dive shop, I recommend checking out The James and Mac shop. They are conveniently located in the Giftun Azur resort and offer daily trips, scuba training and multiple days safaris.

Scapa Flow, Scotland

Scapa Flow, nestled in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, is an unparalleled scuba diving haven, particularly in the month of March. The crisp, cool waters of this North Atlantic gem offer an adventure like no other. Why March, you ask? Well, it’s the perfect time to explore this underwater wonderland when visibility peaks, and marine life awakens from its winter slumber.

Scapa Flow is renowned for its exceptional wreck diving opportunities, with sunken relics of World War I battleships and other vessels dotting the seabed. These captivating wrecks are beautifully preserved in the cold waters, providing an unmatched historical dive experience. Some must-visit dive sites include the iconic HMS Royal Oak, the SMS Markgraf, and the dramatic blockships.

The marine life here is nothing short of spectacular, although it won’t look like anything you have seen in tropical destinations. In March, you can encounter playful seals, jellyfish, and an array of colorful sea anemones. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive wolf fish lurking among the kelp forests. If you’re (very) lucky, you might even spot pods of orcas passing through the area. The diversity of marine species in Scapa Flow is a true testament to the health of its underwater ecosystems.

For accommodation, the Orkney Islands are known for their warm hospitality, making your visit as enjoyable on land as it is beneath the waves. The Sands Hotel and the Orcades Hostel are among my favorites, offering convenience and stunning sea views. As for the dive centers, I recommend checking out Kraken Diving and the Scapa Flow Diving Center.

Yap Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia

Yap Lagoon, nestled in the heart of the Western Pacific Ocean, is a true diver’s paradise in March. This dive destination offers an irresistible blend of captivating underwater wonders, top-notch dive resorts, and an array of marine life.

March, with its gentle trade winds and agreeable water temperatures, provides ideal diving conditions in Yap Lagoon. The visibility is superb, making it perfect for exploring the submerged treasures that lie beneath. The absence of crowded dive sites during this season ensures an intimate and tranquil experience with the ocean’s wonders.

Speaking of dive sites, Yap Lagoon is home to some of the most extraordinary underwater landscapes. The renowned “Manta Ray Bay” is a must-visit, where divers can witness these graceful giants glide majestically through the water. Beyond mantas, Yap offers diverse encounters, from encounters with reef sharks at “Vertigo” to the mysterious, labyrinthine “Cathedral,” known for its awe-inspiring rock formations.

What truly sets Yap Lagoon apart is its marine life. March is the perfect time to witness the mesmerizing mating dance of the manta rays. Moreover, the coral gardens teem with vibrant marine species, including colorful nudibranchs, hawksbill turtles, and schools of barracuda. Yap’s rich biodiversity also includes macro wonders like pygmy seahorses and ornate ghost pipefish.

For those seeking a luxurious and comfortable stay, Yap boasts some of the finest dive resorts in the region. These resorts offer not only plush accommodations but also comprehensive dive packages. Manta Ray Bay Resort, for instance, combines world-class amenities with easy access to Yap’s prime dive sites.

Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Ningaloo Reef, nestled along the remote coast of Western Australia, emerges as an absolute gem among scuba diving destinations.  Weather conditions in March are nothing short of ideal, providing the ultimate underwater adventure.

When it comes to dive sites, Ningaloo Reef boasts an array of vibrant underwater worlds. The Cod Spot is a must-visit, teeming with schools of inquisitive potato cod. The Navy Pier, a world-renowned shore dive, reveals a breathtaking diversity of marine life. However, it’s the Muiron Islands that truly steal the spotlight. There, you can encounter graceful manta rays gliding majestically through the crystal-clear waters. The diversity of dive sites ensures that whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, Ningaloo has something to offer.

But what truly sets Ningaloo Reef apart is its marine life. In March, you’ll have the privilege of swimming alongside gentle giants—the whale sharks. These colossal creatures make their annual visit to the reef, creating a unique opportunity for divers to share the water with these magnificent beings. It’s an awe-inspiring experience that you’ll cherish forever.

Moreover, the reef is a marine life sanctuary, from colorful coral gardens to playful turtles and an array of fish species.

For those seeking a lavish diving experience, Ningaloo offers a range of top-notch dive resorts that cater to every diver’s dream. The Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef eco-luxe camp stands out, allowing you to drift to sleep in your eco-friendly safari tent just steps away from the reef. This is where luxury meets the untamed beauty of the sea.

Malapascua, Philippines

Malapascua is one of the best diving destinations in March. Besides the amazing weather, in this period of the year the island is less crowded than in the Summer or Christmas season, making it an ideal destination if you would like to have a relaxed scuba holiday.

Speaking of dive sites, Malapascua is renowned for the incredible underwater experiences it offers. The star attraction is undoubtedly Monad Shoal, one of the best dive spots worldwide to witness the breathtaking spectacle of thresher sharks. It’s one of the few places in the world where you’re almost guaranteed a sighting. Note that dives in Monad Shoal take place in the early morning, with dive boats leaving the island around 5:00AM.  In addition you will be required to be certified as advanced open water or as a deep water diver. Gato Island is another highlight, featuring stunning tunnels and caves teeming with marine life, including sea snakes, nudibranchs, nurse sharks, and a variety of colorful fish.

But Malapascua isn’t just about the thresher sharks. March is also an excellent time to explore the vibrant coral gardens of Kemod Shoal and Chocolate Island. These sites are home to an abundance of marine life, including schools of barracudas, pygmy seahorses, and dazzling macro critters like ghost pipefish and blue-ringed octopuses.
